Holiday Inn Hotel

"I remember the fashion show at the Holiday Inn very well…"

During the siege the Holiday Inn was the only functioning in the city. The hotel was built during the Winter Olympic Games. On April 6, 1992 it was the headquarter of the SDS party whose members were shooting at the Sarajevo citizens gathered in front of the Parliament. As foreign journalists were staying at the hotel it was less frequently shelled than the surrounding buildings. Nevertheless, a great number of rooms was burnt or destroyed. It was one of the few hotels in which the most prized rooms were those without a view. A view of the mountains meant a view of a snipers’ nest. During the siege the rule was: If you see him, he sees you. The hotel took in guests all through the siege.

Sarajevo citizens: In their own words

“It is always good to make people happy, at least for a short while, to draw their attention away from the shells, from the general situation in the city. I remember the fashion show at the Holiday Inn very well.”

- Amela Vilić, Costume Designer

“Well I guess it’s kind of sad when I remember a play, or rather my favorite role that I have ever played, by the croissants that the director stole from the Holiday Inn and served us before the beginning of the rehearsal, just so that we would be strong enough to spend ten hours doing the play. That was probably the sweetest and best payment that any actor has ever received.”

- Admir Glamočak, Actor

“The first postage stamps were designed… We managed to arrange a promotion meeting in January at the Holiday Inn Hotel... We thought that this promotion would result in the realization of our ideas, which was to launch two sets of stamps, one for philatelists and the other for internal use.”

- Meho Akšamija, Designer
